Ways to buy power

Index: buying at market price

Every kWh is bought at the ERCOT market price. Nothing is locked in, so when the market is low, your cost is low too. When prices rise, your cost moves with them. It works best for businesses with room in the budget and a plan for peak hours.

Market price you pay, hour by hourYour usage
The dot traces the market price you pay through the day, including the afternoon peak. Illustrative.

Who it fits

  • Buyers who can ride out a heat wave or a freeze
  • Sites that can cut load fast when prices jump
  • Short-term or bridge needs

The trade-off

Often the lowest cost over time, with more movement when the grid is tight. Best for budgets with room to flex.

Common questions

Can I protect myself on index?

Yes. Pairing index with peak alerts and the ability to shift load is how large users manage it. Many later move to Block & Index or Percent Fixed.

What happens in an event like Winter Storm Uri?

Index customers pay what the market pays. That's why we only recommend it to sites that understand and can handle that risk.
